Economic Community Development Institute
I am a Refugee from Iraq. I worked with the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, which put my family and me in danger. So we eventually moved to Columbus, where there is a sizeable Iraqi community. Through them I learned about the Jewish Family Services and how they had helped other refugees find work.
When I contacted Jewish Family Services, I received a very warm welcome. They helped me build a resume and prepare for interviews – even taught me how to dress, act, and move. At the time I was on public assistance so they provided a gas card for my visits to the Center. Jewish Family Services has a good relationship with ECDI and made sure my resume got to the right person. I then contacted the HR manager, got an interview and was hired.
My work with ECDI is very rewarding. We are the 4th largest financial institution in the U.S. that specializes in small business loans. The job was a challenge for me in the beginning because I am a civil engineer, but I was hired due to my management experience and my connection with Jewish Family Services. I have learned a lot about the banking business through my colleagues. They have also helped me a great deal with the language. With their support, I have earned two promotions since joining this company. I feel very fortunate. I would not be here if it wasn’t for the great reputation Jewish Family Services has for helping people in my situation.
