Sheila’s Story

When an unexpected layoff ended Sheila’s 20+ year career as a youth mental health counselor, she felt anxious about the job search and being able to make rent.

Determined to get back on her feet, Sheila turned to Jewish Family Services (JFS) for help.

After assessing Sheila’s needs through the individualized intake process, JFS provided rental assistance to help Sheila keep her apartment until she could find a new job and connected her with a dedicated career coach.

Working with a JFS career counselor helped Sheila regain her confidence. Together, they refreshed her résumé and cover letter and practiced for interviews—help that led her to a new position at an integrated care facility for youth.

“The JFS career counselors are great. You know you can find help here.”

JFS continued to support Sheila’s successful transition, connecting her with Dress for Success for professional clothing to start her new role and providing a gas card to ease the financial burden of transportation before she received her first paycheck.

Today, Sheila feels empowered to build on her success and support others on their journeys.
