When Muhsen Faizi and his family of eight arrived in Columbus from Afghanistan in June 2024, they were escaping life-threatening danger. Muhsen was a construction worker for the U.S. Army, a role that, under Taliban rule, marked him as a traitor. Fleeing Afghanistan was the only path to safety, but arriving in a new country came with its own fears.
“When my family left Kabul, my biggest worry was how I was going to communicate,” Muhsen shared. “It was such a relief to have a JFS case manager who is from my country and speaks my language. I knew I was in good hands.”
From their first day here, JFS surrounded the family with the essentials: housing, food, healthcare, school enrollment, and transportation support. Beyond the basics, JFS focused on helping the Faizis rebuild their lives with dignity.
One of Muhsen’s sons has cerebral palsy and requires consistent medical care. JFS guided the family through the complex U.S. healthcare system to ensure they secured disability benefits to support his care.
“JFS provides families a well-coordinated soft landing,” said a team member who worked closely with the family.
Just over a year after arriving, four members of the Faizi family are working, and the household is earning $10,000+ per month. They are self-sufficient and building a new life with security, purpose, and pride.
